Mesean Bomar, 20, of South 13th Court in Nashville pleaded guilty to inserting a scalpel into the rectum of a 9-month old tabby female kitten and then setting the kitten on fire.
Bomar was sentenced to to 11 months and 29 days in jail, fined $2,500 and is prohibited from owning any animals for three years. This is the first time the maximum sentence had been handed down in an animal abuse case.
Laura Turner, an animal activist from Nashville, said Bomar's sentence was handed down on the first day of "National Be Kind to Animals Week." Turner said, "This is an example of aggravated animal abuse, which sent 8,000 signatures on petitions to the state Legislature urging an upgrade to the current law." The law failed to pass on the House floor. If it had passed, it would have made animal abuse a felony with a fine up to $3,000 and a prison term of up to six years.
Bomar's court appointed attorney said the sentence would be appealed.
Investigators said Bomar pushed a scalpel into the recum of the 9-month old female tabby. A fireplace grate prevented him from throwing the cat into the fireplace so he poured alcohol on the animal and set her on fire. Bomar said the animal had defecated on him.
The incident occured at an apartment Bomar was visiting on North Royal Oaks Boulevard. After the kitten was set on fire, she ran around the apartment for about 15 minutes setting small fires in the apartment. When the kitten ran outside, someone poured water on the kitten to put out the fire.
The kitten was takan to a Franklin veterinarian where she appeared to be recovering. Infection from the scalpel wound foreced the vets to euthanize her. She had sustained burns over 60-70% of her body, fractured left leg and the rectum injury. The veterinarian's office called her Cleopatra.
Bomar was arrested at the fast food place where he worked. At first he denied the charges. During the hearing there was testimony Bomar had allegedly abused the animal in the past. Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
