A Chautauqua County couple was charged July 13 with cruelty to animals for their alleged illegal activity involving 117 miniature and toy poodles, State Police and the Chautauqua County Humane Society announced.

The identities of the Town of Mina couple were not released by authorities. They were charged with a misdemeanor count of cruelty.

Police said the dogs were taken to the Humane Society Thursday. Officials said the animals were evaluated by a veterinarian and were undergoing additional medical evaluations.
