CONVICTED: Was justice served?

Please vote on whether or not you feel the sentence in this case was appropriate for the crime. (Be sure to read the entire case and sentencing before voting.)

weak sentence = one star
strong sentence = 5 stars

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Dog-fighting
Philadelphia, PA (US)

Incident Date: Monday, Sep 27, 2004
County: Philadelphia

Charges: Felony CTA
Disposition: Convicted

Defendants/Suspects:
» Robert West
» Jerrett Coleman
» Melvin Stokley

Robert West, Jerrett Coleman and Melvin Stokley were arrested on 9/27/2004 on the 5100 W. Master St. Phila., PA 19139. Police received a call of a dog fight in progress. Upon arrival, police were able to observe at least thirty people on scene. They were only able to capture three of the people that were at this location. Robert West was known to operate a fighting location called "The Pound". West lived across the street from the fight that was in progress, at 5126 W. Master St.

West and Stokley pleaded guilty of an F3. Stokley was given 3 years probation on 5/16/2005.

When the judge asked Robert West about how many dogs he had at his location he advised the judge that he only had one. The judge asked me PSPCA officer Tony Beltram how many dogs were at his location and Beltram advised the judge that he was able to see two, but could hear more when he was at his house prior to this arrest.

The judge gave Beltram a court order to go out and inventory the dogs at this location, where he counted 7 dogs at West's house. The judge called Beltram back and advised him to remove the dogs.

On 5/19/2005, Beltram went back in front of the judge and West was found to be in contempt of court. West was given 5 months and 29 days in prison.

On 5/24/2005, West was given an additional 11 and a half months in prison, 5 years of reporting probation and 100 hrs. of community service. The judge also ordered that he can not have, keep or be around any dogs throughout this time.

Note: Classifications and other fields should not be used to determine what specific charges the suspect is facing or was convicted of - they are for research and statistical purposes only. The case report and subsequent updates outline the specific charges.
