Robert Hatch, Jr., age 19 pleaded guilty in Carroll County Superior Court to arson and a Class-A misdemeanor of criminal trespass in connection with a fire that totaled a home in April, 1999. Hatch was arrested for setting fire to the screen door of the James Knight residence on Stritch Road in Conway. Hatch received a suspended 3 1/2 to 7 year sentence to state prison. Judge Tina Nadeau sentenced Hatch to serve 12 months in the House of Corrections for the criminal trespass charge. He will not be allowed to do work release or release with an electronic monitor during this time. The suspended state prison sentence is consecutive to the criminal trespass ruling and can be brought forward at anytime within the next 10 years.

Hatch must also participate in a specialized counseling program while on probation and will wear an electronic minitor after his release from prison. A $500 restituion for uninsured losses fine must be paid to the home owner.

Hatch was an honor student and 4-H club member, and joined the Conway fire department at age 18. Hatch may be charged with further crimes in connection with five other unexplained fires includine one in which cattle were killed.
