Harris County deputies are searching for the teenagers who set a dog on fire and left it to die. Precinct 4 deputy constables said the dog was found in the 8300 block of Walnut Ridge in northeast Harris County on July 4.
"A person in their car reported that they had observed six juveniles putting some kind of substance onto a stray dog and setting that dog on fire," said Capt. Paul Stanton, with Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office.
The animal suffered from second-degree burns. It was taken to the Houston Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, where it is in the intensive care unit.
"At this time, he's recovering from injuries that are pretty severe, so we are trying to keep him quiet," said Alice Sarmiento, with the SPCA.
The dog is four to six months old and weighs less than 30 pounds. It was wearing a collar.
SPCA officials received numerous calls from people claiming to be the dog's owner, but said that based on past experience, people are reacting emotionally and may not really be the owner.
