Officials want to know who killed a dog left hanging in northwest Baltimore. Baltimore City Animal Control officers traveled door to door June 21, in the 2800 block of Gwynns Falls Parkway, looking for answers after a pit bull was found hanging above a creek in a very remote area.

The dog's owner has yet to come forward and officials said they have not found any other signs of abuse.

"The dog was found tied to a stone hanging over a cement culver over a small stream," said Bob Anderson, the director of the city's Bureau of Animal Control.

Officials said the incident began June 17, and Animal Control officers are investigating to determine whether this represents a case of animal cruelty.

"There were no obvious signs of trauma or scars or anything else. One of the things that we're checking into is if he had jumped and slipped and couldn't have gotten back up. (We've handed out fliers) so somebody can come forward to help us," Anderson said.

The Snyder Foundation for Animals has contributed to Animal Control's reward, offering $1,500 for information.

The private nonprofit organization, which supports Maryland-based animal welfare agencies, runs the Stop Cruelty Against Animals Too program that offers rewards for information, similar to the Crime Stoppers initiative.

"When we heard the news, we were certainly horrified, and I don't think that you have to be an animal lover to be horrified to hear about such an act of vicious, senseless animal cruelty," said Lora Junkin, the executive director of the William Snyder Foundation for Animals.

The group is offering as much as $1,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case.

That's in addition to the $1,500 already offered by Animal Control.

The adult male pit bull was found hanging by a choke chain inside Hanlon Park Friday night. It's leash had been tied to a large rock.

PETA is also sending its anti-violence public service announcement hosted by actor Dennis Franz to TV stations serving the Baltimore area.
