An Elkhart man went to jail on June 24 after he left his dog locked in a pickup truck for more than an hour Friday afternoon in sweltering heat. The 59-year-old Elkhart man was held on a preliminary misdemeanor charge of animal cruelty, and the dog was turned over to the Humane Society, Goshen Patrolman Matthew Yoder said.

Employees and customers of a store in the 4000 block of Elkhart Road called police at 5:28 p.m., about an hour after one of the bystanders first saw the Jack Russell terrier in the cab of a pickup in the parking lot, Yoder said.

When Yoder got there, store employees said they'd tried paging the dog's owner but got no response. The dog was lying on the floor in the pickup, barely able to raise its head.

Yoder used tools to pick the lock on the pickup truck. The dog's leash was wrapped around a seat belt, so Yoder cut the leash and got the dog out of the truck, where one of the bystanders tried to give it some water.

The canine was unable to drink, so Yoder put it in the back of his air-conditioned squad car and some of the other people wrapped the dog in wet towels to cool it off and kept urging it to drink.

The air temperature was 95 degrees, Yoder said. As the group of people cared for the pooch, the owner came out just after 6 p.m., Yoder said.

Yoder arrested the man, who told Yoder he loves his dog but got distracted in the store when he ran into an old friend and they began talking.

The man could face up to one year in prison if he's convicted.

After the dog got cooled down, shelter personnel came and picked up the animal, Yoder said
