Case Updates

The fate of a pit bull involved in the deliberate mauling of a tethered wild hog could depend on the outcome of a Titusville police department investigation, animal control officials said today.

The pit bull was captured late Monday after police were tipped to what investigators said was a report of animal torture by three Titusville men accompanied by two children.

The three men, Philip Hair, 26, Alonzo Hair, 40 and Derrick Hamilton, 25, were charged with animal cruelty, fighting or baiting animals and child neglect.

The Hairs bonded out of jail about 3:30 a.m. today. Hamilton remained at the county detention center on a $10,000 bond.

Titusville police officers walked up on the grisly scene as two pit bulls repeatedly bit the wild hog as it squealed and tried to pull away from the rope binding its hind legs.

An officer first shot the hog and then fatally wounded one of the pit bulls when it began acting aggressively, officials said. The other dog was placed in the custody of Brevard County Animal Services.

"All we did was pick up the dog. Our only role in this is dog keeper," said Bob Brown, spokesman with the county's animal services office.

The adult pit bull is being held at the North Animal Care Center in Titusville and will be kept pending the outcome of the police department's investigation.

Police were still trying to determine just who the dogs belonged to. Officials said Hamilton was at the scene of the hog mauling holding a leash and a collar.
