A Port Washington couple has pleaded not guilty to six counts each of abandoning an animal and six counts each of cruelty to an animal in Tuscarawas County Court at Uhrichsville.

Steve Johnson, 48, and Hope Johnson, 46, both of 1504 Cheesehouse Rd., were charged with the violations on March 4, 2003.

Terry Warner, assistant Tuscarawas County dog warden, said his office received a report on Jan. 23 that an adult dog and some puppies were under I-77 at the intersection of Wolf and Stonecreek Rds.

Warner said he found the six dogs a mother and five 4- or 5-month-old puppies at the location and recognized them as the Johnsons dogs from a previous call to the couples house.

He said the dogs were out in single-digit degree weather about eight to 10 miles from the Johnsons residence and had not been fed. According to a witness, the dogs had been there for about four days.

On Jan. 24, Warner said he spoke with the couple who said they did not know how the dogs had gotten to the location.

The dogs were taken to the county dog pound. Warner said four of the puppies were sold, but the mother and one puppy were destroyed after a length of time.
