Officials are seeking information from anyone who might have details about a gray fox and a dead boxer puppy that were abandoned on the side of Steele Hill Rd. at New Philadelphia sometime in late August 2003.

The gray fox, which actually is black in color with a white tail, ran off into the woods after it was found, according to Tuscarawas County Dog Warden Terry Warner. It was wearing a collar and apparently had been kept in a ferret cage that was nearby. Warner said he believes the animal was a pet.

Warner said when he arrived at the scene about noon Friday, the boxer was dead and in a plastic brown garbage can. He said the purebred male dog was about 7 to 8 months old and brindle and white in color.

There was no outward indication of how the dog died, Warner said, and he was not sure if the dog was dead when it was placed inside the garbage can. No garbage can lid was found, and nothing else was inside the can.

He estimated that the dog had been dead less than 48 hours before it was found.

Warner said area wildlife rehabilitator Leslie Humphries notified him and New Philadelphia Director of Environmental Health Jim Ulis about the situation.

Officials think the animals had been at the location since August 21, 2003 because a city worker had reported driving past and seeing the garbage can and cage, but had not stopped or noticed anything inside them.

It appears the animals were thrown by the side of the road, Warner said.

Thats terrible. Thats just terrible, he said. Its cruel, period. No matter how the dog died, it was in a very, very cruel manner, and if we find the owner, they are going to be prosecuted to the max, believe me.

Humphries said she is offering a $100 reward for information leading to the conviction of the person or persons responsible.

Anyone with information about the fox can call John Suchora, wildlife officer with the Ohio Division of Wildlife assigned to Tuscarawas County, at (330) 852-4827. To provide information about the dog, contact Warner or Tuscarawas County Dog Warden Karen Slough at (330) 339-2616.
