A pit bull puppy dumped in front of a Colfax Street residence on the evening of June 22 was so badly injured the county Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals opted for euthanasia, according to SPCA cruelty investigator Bev Greco.
"The dog was in horrendous condition," Greco said. "There was nothing we could do but put it down. ... He was so messed up. It was horrendous."
City police were alerted of the injured-dog dumping around 8:50 p.m. on June 22. A Colfax Street resident told police he observed two or three young black males ride up to the front of his home on bicycles, drop off the dog, and flee the area.
He was unable to provide thorough descriptions of any of the suspects due to it being dark outside, according to a police report.
Ptl. Philip Fox noted in the report that the dog was bleeding from its neck-and-shoulder area, appeared very weak and could not hold its head up when he arrived on scene. The dog had been placed under a van's rear bumper "as if in an attempt to hide the dog."
City animal control officer Bill Knipe transported the injured dog to the SPCA shelter in Vineland, according to police.
The male dog was only 6 or 7 months old, according to Greco.
Greco noted the dog had puncture wounds, consistent with it having been subjected to dog fighting, but also had other injuries that would indicate it had been abused by people as well.
Greco asked that anyone with information about the cruel treatment of this dog contact the SPCA at 691-1500 References« Back to Search Results
