A Charleston woman was charged on June 24 with animal cruelty after her dog -- covered with sores and maggots -- was taken the day before by animal control officers. The misdemeanor warrant against Kim Kidd, 40, was filed in Kanawha County Magistrate Court.

Blue, a gray and white Husky, was taken from Kidd's home on Charleston's West Side on June 23. His ears had been eaten by flies and he had a huge sore on a back leg.

"It smelled just like it was dead," said Charleston Humane Officer Clarence Carte.

Kidd wasn't home when the dog was confiscated and learned about it from the local news.

She said she takes care of the dog and couldn't exactly explain why he was in bad shape.

But her neighbors knew there was a problem. "It looked very ill, like it was getting ready to pass away in this 90-degree weather today," said Carlos Smith.

Tammy Coles added, "He just had a bunch of sores on him."

Kidd told the media that Blue has cancer. "I should know because I work in the medical field," she said.

But the vets who treated him said that's not true. They said the dog underwent surgery and was on antibiotics.
