Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Margarita Moreno
A Dona Ana County woman was arrested for Animal Cruelty after her dog died from the extreme heat. 40 year-old Margarita Moreno is being held in the County Detention Center on a $20,000 bond. A neighbor first noticed the dog lying in a self-dug ditch under Ms. Moreno's home. It was the dog's only protection from the sun and the 100+ degree heat.
In addition to the dog, there were other pets outside the home; eight chickens, and a small puppy, tied down by a rope only two feet long, also without food or water.
When Animal Control Officers arrived, rushed the first dog to an emrgency shelter but it was too late. The other animals are under the care of the county.
With the several counts of Animal Cruelty filed against her, Ms. Moreno could go to prison for up to 18 months. She is being held at the Dona Ana County Detention Center on $20,000 bond. References- KVIA - June 21, 2005
