Cockfighting - 13 birds seized
Albuquerque, NM (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Mar 31, 2005
County: Bernalillo

Disposition: Alleged

Abuser names unreleased

An Albuquerque animal shelter is now holding 13 roosters believed to be fighting roosters. The birds were seized from an Albuquerque man, who was cited with a misdemeanor in April. The case is pending.

Cockfighting is legal in New Mexico, but it is illegal in 13 of the state's 33 counties and 29 of its cities.

In Albuquerque, cockfighting is prohibited as an act of cruelty.

It also is against Albuquerque's ordinance to possess implements for cockfighting, such as the spurs attached to roosters' legs.
