The Humane Society of the United States is offering a $2,500 reward in connection with the torture of a black female cat whose injuries were so severe that she later had to be euthanized.

"It was a particularly brutal case," Samantha Mullen, program coordinator for the Humane Society's Mid-Atlantic regional office in Flanders, said.

"What could explain an animal being bludgeoned and left for dead," Mullen said in announcing the reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

The cat sustained horrendous injuries that authorities attributed to either being beaten or tortured.

It was found last Sunday morning (June 12) by a Morris County maintenance worker at Old Troy Park on Reynolds Avenue, Police Sgt. Yvonne Christiano said.

Both rear legs were broken, Christiano said. The cat sustained blunt trauma to her abdomen, resulting in internal bleeding.

The cat was also suffering from heat stroke, causing neurological damage, Christiano said.

It had been stuffed inside a box, Christiano said, and the box had been placed in a 32-gallon trash bag.

The cat was rushed to the Animal Emergency and Referral Clinic in Fairfield, where veterinarians determined that her injuries were too serious to heal, police said.

Christiano said she could not recall any other cat-torture cases in the area.

Mullen said she didn't know of any other incidents but added, "It seems we are reading about a disturbing amount of animal abuse cases throughout the country."
