Police in the Benton Township area are looking to put a stop to dog fighting. On June 14, 2005, they found a pit bull that was apparently used in a fighting ring.
June 14, 2005, a woman walking along Euclid and Britain found a pit bull on the side of the road bleeding to death.
Police think the dog, now named Britty, lost in a dogfight and was then pushed from a moving vehicle, left to die.
Animal Aid of Southwestern Michigan says there has been a surge in the number of dogfights in the area.
There is a lot of organized dog fighting in this community and there is a lot of big money in dog fighting and betting. Maybe people don't know its against the law or who to call when those things happen, said Sue Burkhard of Animal Aid of Southwestern Michigan.
Britty has multiple bite wounds on her head, neck, legs and stomach. She's recovering at the Nickerson Animal Hospital in Benton Harbor. For now, they are working to keep infection away and manage her pain.
Britty is just one many victims in what Animal Aid says is a recent surge in fights. Animal Aid is working to stop the dogfights but without some type of trail or evidence, it could be hard.
Once they can't use them they will dump them somewhere and figure they will go away, says Burkhard.
Dog fighting is illegal in all 50 states.
Animal Aid is offering a $500 reward to anyone with any information that could lead to an arrest.
