St. Charles Parish officers executed a search warrant on May 26 in New Sarpy at the residence of Derwin Walker, 917 E. Lawson St, after a tip was called in to report dog fighting.

The search resulted in the seizure of 12 pit bull terriers, 543 grams of marijuana, 8.5 grams of crack cocaine, two firearms, and dog fighting paraphernalia.

Walker was not home at the time of the search, and a warrant has been issued for his arrest.

The 12 pit bulls were afflicted with wounds consistent with dog fighting.

Champagne said that anyone in the public with knowledge of a situation similar to these should report it to authorities.

Recently, there has been a rash of arrests in south Louisiana involving dog fighting, with even a man know as the "Godfather" or "Kingpin" of the world of dog-fighting recently being arrested at his residence in Broussard.

"We're happy that we got these," Champagne said, "but this is a problem that is bigger than we ever thought it was."

Anyone knowing the whereabouts of Brandon Thomas or Derwin Walker should contact the St. Charles Parish Sheriff's Office at (985) 783-6807.

Case Updates

A 25-year-old New Sarpy resident was arrested on several drug charges and cruelty to animals after a five-month investigation.

Derwin Walker was arrested on Nov. 23 and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute crack cocaine, marijuana, hydrocodone, cruelty to animals, rabies inoculation required (12 counts), possession of a fire arm with narcotics (two counts), possession of a firearm by a convicted felon (two counts), drug paraphernalia, Pitt Bull registration (12 counts), possession of fighting dogs (eight counts) and breeding permit required (two counts).

Walker was arrested on a warrant that was issued on June 2, but the delay was because of a long, ongoing investigation.

May 26, officers executed a search warrant at the subject's residence, said Capt. Pat Yoes, public information officer with St. Charles Parish. During the search officers located 12 pit bull Terriers, marijuana, crack cocaine, hydrocodone, drug paraphernalia, dog fighting paraphernalia and two guns.

Yoes said the 12 pit bulls were seized, and according to the veterinarian report, several of the seized dogs suffered from poor husbandry and a variety of ailments, including wounds consistent with dog fighting. Two of the seized dogs had to be euthanized due to serious wounds consistent with dog fighting.

None of the dogs found were registered or inoculated as required by the law, according to Yoes.

Walker was arrested and is being held at the Nelson Coleman Correction Center in Hahnville on an $886,500 bond set by Judge Emile St. Pierre and a $1,000 cash bond set by Judge Robert Chaisson.
