Neglect of sheep and cattle
Chatham, ON (CA)

Incident Date: Sunday, Jun 30, 2002

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged:
» Stephen Sturgis
» Janice Sturgis

Sheep and cattle were left to starve to death in a barn. The OSPCA found partially decomposed bodies of eight sheep and rotting bodies of four cows.

Ontario SPCA investigators inspected the property and discovered cattle and sheep carcasses. Two entire cattle carcasses were found lying inside a wooden corn crib-type structure. Two other partially scavenged cattle carcasses were also found on the property. Investigators also found eight dead sheep piled together inside a barn structure.

It is believed that the animals died over a two- to three-month period due to a lack of care. A storage shed contained some extremely poor-quality hay, and no other food was found on the property.
