More than 30 suspected fighting dogs living in deplorable conditions at a Bald Knob residence were reportedly discovered earlier this week.

Jaxie Heppner of the Beebe Humane Society returned with Bald Knob police on June 10 and officially opened an investigation into the operation, seizing three of the animals from the owner, but not before one of the creatures was damaged beyond repair.

Turbo, a two-year-old pit bull discovered tied to a tree and suffering from multiple infected wounds, was so traumatized with injuries he had to be killed, Heppner said.

One of the officers assisting Heppner, Bald Knob Animal Control Officer Brent Cooper, said the dog looked like it had been fighting. Turbo had bite marks and deep lacerations that are tell-tale signs of pit dog fighting.

Dog fighting is against the law in the United States; a misdemeanor offense in Arkansas, and a felony offence in a number of states.

Heppner said that with Turbo's medical condition and fighting history there was no choice but to put him to sleep.

It was a sad ending for a dog that had a sad life, Heppner said.

Three pit bull puppies were taken from the residence, each six weeks old, and are being nursed back to health by the Beebe Humane Society, Heppner said.

The owner could face charges of animal cruelty if convicted.

"He had dogs tied to trees with logging chains. Some of them had wounds and infections," Heppner said.

Most of the dogs were approachable, Heppner said, but at least two were vicious.

He has 14 days to improve the living conditions of the dogs, Heppner said. If he fails to do so a warrant will be issued for his arrest.

Each of the three dogs will be available for adoption, Heppner said, along with nearly 50 other dogs ranging from retrievers to Basset hounds and even a Weimaraner already at the society.
