Neighbors rescued several dogs -- including puppies -- from a home in Elyria after the owners moved out and left them to starve. The puppies' parents don't look much better; both have open sores and most likely have ringworm.

The adult dogs were rescued from a filthy outdoor cage, and the puppies were left inside the home, with no food or water for at least a week.

"I pounded on the door, (the) door opened, (and I) heard puppies scratching on (the) basement door," said Joel Szczepanski, who rescued the dogs. "They were really skinny, stomachs bloated, dirty from feces and everything."

Neighbor Joel Szczepanski took the animals and called the Animal Protective League.

Now that that puppies are fed and warm, the next step is to give them a bath, de-worm them and give them their first set of shots. Then, they'll be on their way to recovery.

The puppies and their parents are expected to be OK in a few weeks, NewsChannel5 reported.

In the meantime, charges of abandonment and animal cruelty are pending against the dogs' owners.
