The Concordia Narcotics Task Force found their largest seizure of drugs ever June 2 in the branches of a tree.

Two pounds of powder cocaine, surrounded by 12 pit bulls, in the woods.

Ferriday Police, the FBI, Louisiana State Police and the Concordia Parish Sheriff's Office made the first break in the case when they attempted to serve an arrest warrant on Maurice Smith at his home.

When officers arrived, Smith and Damion White, 28, of Ferriday, and others, fled on foot through the woods.

Officers caught White and discovered two bags of marijuana in his pants pocket. He was arrested and charged with possession of marijuana, resisting an officer by flight and a parole violation.

A search of the house resulted in the discovery of drug paraphernalia, more cocaine and a semi-automatic pistol and 12 pitbulls.

Representatives from the Concordia Animal Welfare Shelter came to the scene to remove the pit bulls, that were chained up and hungry, Maxwell said.

"(Drugs) go with dog fighting," Maxwell said. "They are all intertwined. The guys doing the dog fighting are doing a lot of other things other than dog fighting."

Animal cruelty charges will also be added to those arrested.

District Attorney Investigator Johnny Loomis said about half a pound of cocaine was found three weeks ago in the same neighborhood.

Tips and cooperation from Doty Road residents were essential to the case, Maxwell said, as was cooperation among all the involved agencies.

Authorities are still searching for Smith.
