6 cat killings around park area Tigard, OR (US)Incident Date: Wednesday, Feb 28, 2001 County: Washington
Disposition: Open
Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!
In March a cat named Maia slipped out of the house one night and was later found skinned and left for dead in nearby Summerlake Park.
The unknown killer is thought to have attacked other cats in the area.
Mark Shanks, 47, adopted Maia from the animal shelter last July. "It was just hearbreaking to me. I can't tell you how much it hurt." Shanks has contributed $500 to the reward fund and sympathetic co-workers rounded up to $400 to help. $1,000 donation was donated by the Humane Society of the United States bringing the total reward to $3,300.
Recent cat killings one in March and four in June around the Summerlake and Winterlake park area has residents and the police concerned and baffled. The police investigation has hit a dead end.
Maia was one of three cats found skinned in the park in two weeks last month. The consistencies of the injuries and location of the animals seem to confirm the incidents are related.
It is not clear if the other two cat deaths are related. In March a dead cat was found lying near a sidewalk about three miles from the park. June 14 a couple discovered a dead at at 128th Avenue and Marie Court. The cat had been doused with beer, with a bottle stuck in its mouth.
The individual held responsible for the cat killings would probably be charged with aggravated animal abuse, a class C felony punishable by as much as five years in prison and a $5,000 fine.
