The cat of a 70-year old woman was found shot and paralyzed outside her west Mobile home. Elizabeth Allen, owner of Little Bit, said she was feeding her four outisde cats when the discovered "Little Bit" was missing. She eventually found the cat shot, covered in flies beneath bushes near her home at 6657 Hound's Run South.

Allen said the cat dragged itself by its front legs to a neighbor's yard where it hid. Veterinarian Mike Rehm tried to save the cat whose wounds were crawling with maggots. He was forced to put Little Bit to sleep. Rehm said, "It's frustrating. She was extremely upset when she brought her cat in."

Rehm said this is not unusual for Mobile where animal control workers report about 15 cases of animal abuse each month, most of them involving gunshots.

The police say they will continue looking for the shooter.

Last year the Legislature passed a law providing up to 10 years in prison and a $5,000 fine for intentionally torturing a dog or a cat.
