The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office is investigating whether animal cruelty played a role in the deaths of 130 pigs discovered in barns and pens east of the Lubbock International Airport.
The dead pigs were discovered Sunday after authorities recieved a call about loose animals in the area. Deputies had shepherded the loose pigs from the road when they found the others dead nearby, according to police reports.
"We assume it was probably from starvation," Sheriff's investigator Andy Gentry said Monday. "We're considering charges."
Cruelty to animals is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by a maximum fine of $4,000, a maximum term of a year in jail or both.
An inspector with the Texas Animal Health Commission said he believed the pigs suffered from starvation.
"We feel like there is no disease involved in this," said Jimmy Harden, an inspector with the Texas Animal Health Commission.
The pigs' owner, Willis J. Scott, 72, lives in New Mexico and has medical problems, so he hired a man to look after the animals, Gentry said.
The owner thought everything was fine with the pigs, who were being prepared to go to market, Gentry said.
Authorities would not release the name of the man who agreed to look after the pigs.
Gentry said the pigs were fairly young and some had been dead for three weeks. The man who checked on the pigs said some of them were sick, and he was trying to save the ones he could, Gentry said.
Gentry said the man who was looking after the pigs "has agreed to go ahead and dispose of these animals." Neighborhood MapFor more information about the Interactive Animal Cruelty Maps, see the map notes.
