Five drunk youths between the ages of 16 and 18 were reported to have allegedly killed two kittens by throwing them over the Whangarei Falls. One kitten was found dead at the bottom of the falls. The other was missing and presumed to have drowned.

The youths have been labeled as "stupid, cruel and obnoxious." The incident has dismayed Whangarei members of the SPCA. They consider it a matter of blatant cruelty.

"I don't think those kids were actually trying to get rid of the poor kittens. I think they were being stupid and cruel and obnoxious."

Their names were not released due to their ages.

The Whangarei police Senior Steve Rudsdale said the kittens had allegedly belonged to the mother of one of the youths.

They have been charged with wilful ill treatment of an animal.
