more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

House set on fire killing 2 dogs & 6 cats
Hubbard, OR (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Feb 16, 2001
County: Marion

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Kim Robert Henkel

Kim Robert Henkel, 55, pleaded guilty on three charges of aggravated animal abuse when he set a house on fire that resulted in killing his two dogs and 6 cats. Henkel admitting setting the fire in a closet of his double-wide manufactured home on Highway 99E in Hubbard.

He said he did it for financial gain. A previous fire at his home had resulted in an insurance payment of several thousand dollars.

Henkel thought the insurance money he would collect from the second fire would pay off his debts so he could start over.

He never explained why he left all his animals except one dog inside the house. He deserved more jail time than other Marion County animal abuse cases because he was an adult and "made a conscious decision to leave those animals at home."

The animals died of suffocation.

Among conditions of the probation are that he pay $1,000 fine and do 120 hours of community service. He was ordered to not possess any animals, including the mixed breed dog he took with him after setting the fire.

The dog he took, called Baby, was placed with relatives.
