Brett R. Rizzo, 22, a Lawrence man, faces a misdemeanor charge of mangling a cat and throwing its body into a trash container at a Lawrence apartment complex.
He appeared before Judge Robert Fairchild and a jury trial was been scheduled for June 13.
The mutilated body of a cat called "Mama Cat" was found the night of Jan 16 by maintenance workers at the Meadowbrook apartment complex. The apartment complex employees had adopted the cat.
Along with the dead cat, officers found blood stains on a wall, a balcony and a door of an apartment.
Rizzo was arrested after the police investigation of the cat's death, he remains free pending the trial.
