Cat chopped to death with samurai sword
Glens Falls, NY (US)

Incident Date: Wednesday, Feb 7, 2001
County: Warren

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: James W. Millington

James W. Millington, 40, of 22 Morgan Avenue was arrested after police said he chopped a cat to pieces with a samuri sword last week in front of his apartment building on Morgan Avenue.

Millington has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony. Police were called to Morgan Avenue at 1:49 p.m. Wednesday, Feb 7, by a passerby who saw Millington repeatedly striking the cat with a sword.

Millington claimed the cat was hit by a car and that he only killed the animal after it had been run over.

Captain Joseph W. Bethel, Glens Falls police department said the cat "was in pieces" by the time the police arrived at the scene.

An autopsy showed the cat was not struck by a car and Millington was arrested as a result of the autopsy findings. Captain Bethel said "We recovered all the pieces of the cat, and the sword, and the person who did it."

The cat didn't belong to Millington. The owner is not known. The cat could have been a stray. The police do not know what prompted the attack on the cat.

Millington was released on his own recognizance. He is due back in court at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday.
