A bobtail cat approximately 2-years old is recovering after animal health care workers removed nine of the sixteen gun pellets that were lodged in its head. The cat has been named Buckshot.

It is believed the cat was shot at close range while in captivity. Douglas Villone, Monson Animal control officer picked up the stray cat earlier this month after a resident on Steward Road complained about the animal. After the cat was restrained in a live trap, he noticed its face was covered with small red welts.

Villone said, "It had a rough-looking face. It looked like it had been in a fight with another animal." Because of its injuries it was taken to the Sherman Veterinary Service in Dover-Foxcroft.

An x-ray showed the cat had been shot many times with a pellet gun. Villone said, "I found it very disturbing that somebody would shoot a cat that many times in the face." He said a cat wouldn't stand still for such treatment and that it would have to been secured in some manner.

The veterinarians removed nine of the "mushroom-shaped" pellets from the animal's head. Villone is holding them as evidence. Getting the other pellets out would likely do more damage to the cat than leaving them in to work themselves out.

The pellets were lodged between and above its eyes.

The maximum sentence for a criminal charge of cruelty to animals is up to a year in jail and a $2,000 fine. A civil violation would bring a fine of up to $500.

Buckshot has been adopted by an Orono wildlife rehabilitator. He seems to be adjusting well to his new home. The new owners say he is lovable and is free
to roam their home. He sleeps sleeps on the bed and gets along well with the family's black Labrador retriever.

No one has come forward with any information about the cat but Villone hopes the reward will help to loosen lips. Donated funds for the reward should be sent to PO Box 308, Monson 04464.
