Cat mutilated, left taped to tree in park
Kearns, UT (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Jul 20, 2000
County: Salt Lake

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

A mutilated 3-year old female cat was found taped to a tree in a park at 5665 South 5220 West, Kearns on July 20th. Temma Martin, media relations specialist for Salt Lake County Animal Services is handling the investigation.

Reward money has been offered by four organizations for information leading to the identification and conviction of those responsible for killing the mutilated cat that was left taped to a tree.

The cat had been missing for less than 24 hours when the body was found by two girls ages 12 and 11.

The cat had belonged to a couple since she was a kitten. The cat was very much a part of the family and they were all devastated by it.

Temma Martin from the Salt Lake County Animal Services said they had received a couple of tips "but nothing promising." Martin said animal cruelty is normally considred a class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail and up to a $1,000 fine. This case in which the cat had been deliberately tortured would probably be considered aggravated animal cruelty, a class A misdemeanor. That is punishable by up to a $2,500 fine and up to one year in jail.
