Someone apparently set one of the neighborhood strays on fire. The cat was discovered by Lynda Lewis on May 23, 2005 as she left for work.

"The cat jumped off the banister on my front porch," said Lewis, who lives at 286 Wayne St. "I didn't even recognize it. It looked like it had been torched."

The male cat was put to sleep May 25 after Lewis contacted Stop the Overpopulation of Pets.

STOP is offering a $200 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for setting the cat on fire.

Lewis said the cat was born underneath a neighbor's porch about a year ago.

"It was a beautiful cat, all black on top with white underneath and white paws," she said. "It was a mitten paw. You don't see them all the time."

Lewis, who owns three inside cats, often puts out food for strays, including the one set on fire.

After not being able to reach anyone from the Richland County Humane Society, Lewis contacted STOP President Diana Nolen.

Nolen took the cat to a veterinarian, but it was too late to help him. She estimated the cat had burns to 90 percent of his body. Nolen said the cat was blind and his ears had melted. She said the soles of the cat's feet were about the only unharmed area.
