Dog shot in parking lot Dearborn, MI (US)Incident Date: Monday, May 16, 2005 County: Wayne
Disposition: Alleged
Alleged: Man
A dog was shot in the parking lot of a Dearborn strip mall on May 16, police stated. A 46-year-old man was walking near the Pier 1 Imports store at the strip mall on Michigan Avenue when he encountered the animal, police said.
The man, who said he felt threatened by the nearly 80-pound Rotweiller-mix, pulled out his gun and fired a shot at the dog, striking it in the leg, police stated.
Some witnesses in the area, however, said that the dog appeared to be harmless.
Police said prior to the shooting, the dog's owner had contacted animal control to report that it had somehow escaped from the yard.
The dog was taken to a nearby veterinary office to be treated and was expected to survive.
The 46-year-old man, from Southfield, was detained by police.
Authorities said the man does have a permit to carry a concealed weapon, but they are seeking charges for unlawful discharge of a firearm causing harm to an animal. References« MI State Animal Cruelty Map « More cases in Wayne County, MI
