A federal agent says a north Georgia mayor, arrested on cockfighting charges, knew exactly what he was doing while attending the weekly events. The feds say the fights were held every Saturday night in Blue Ridge.

Agent John Cagle of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation says Mayor Robert Greene was a regular. Agents shot undercover video during one of the cockfights.

Greene was arrested May 5 and charged with gambling. So was Wayne Rogers, Tommy Rogers, Milton Ross and Clyde Gray. They face charges of commercial gambling, keeping a gambling place and cruelty to animals.

Recently, agents say Mayor Greene was arrested in Kentucky on the same charges.

He was also arrested in Blue Ridge back in 1989 for attending a cockfight.

Case Updates

he GBI Thursday charged five people, including the mayor of the North Georgia town of Blue Ridge, in connection with an illegal cockfighting operation in Fannin County.

GBI spokesman John Bankhead said arrest warrants were executed Thursday morning charging the four organizers, Wayne Rogers, 55, Tommy Rogers, 53, Milton Thomas Ross, 37, and Clyde Bent Gray, 71, all of Mineral Bluff, with commercial gambling, keeping a gambling place and cruelty to animals.

Blue Ridge Mayor Robert Greene, 83, was charged with gambling, Bankhead said. Attempts to reach Greene Thursday afternoon were unsuccessful.

Bankhead said undercover GBI agents attended cockfights on property near the North Carolina line on five occasions.

The fights, held on Saturday nights and promoted by organizers as the "Sawmill Game Club," were attended by as many as 300 people, according to Bankhead.

The investigation is continuing, with more arrests expected, Bankhead said.
