A pair of white swans were beaten and stabbed to death near a nest of eggs in a Bronx park, animal protection officials said.
The swans, believed to be a breeding pair, were found at about 5 p.m. on May 5 near a nest that contained six eggs in Edgewater Park in the Throggs Neck section, American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals spokesman Joseph Pentangelo said.
The female, which weighed about 18 pounds, had been stabbed multiple times and suffered broken ribs, he said. One wound was so substantial that internal organs were visible through it.
The male, which weighed more than 25 pounds, had been stabbed in the chest, Pentangelo said. The ASPCA rescued the six eggs and was keeping them in an incubator in the hopes of taking them to term, he said. It also was offering a reward of up to $2,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.
