Four malnourished horses were seized and one dead horse was found when Lewis County authorities responded to a tip about a farm near Winlock, south of Chehalis.
Three other horses were left at the farm, although they also showed signs of being malnourished. County Animal Control officials were monitoring them.
The four horses were seized Sunday night and were being held at the Lewis County Animal Shelter. Veterinarians estimated they were 15 to 18 years old. "They were tied in stalls where feces were about a foot deep," said shelter supervisor Amy Clark.
