Four horses and a donkey allegedly lacking proper food and care were seized on the morning of May 12 by representatives of the Anderson County Sheriff's Office.
The animals were seized from outside a residence at 419 CR 412, just east of Montalba, after authorities received a complaint that the animals were not receiving adequate care, Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said.
The five animals were taken to a facility outside of Elkhart later on May 12 where they will receive veterinary care, food and water, the sheriff added.
"It appeared that the people who lived there have moved," Taylor said. "...There is some miscellaneous property it looks like they would probably come back for."
As of the morning of May 13, Taylor said the property owners - Charles and Rosanne Byrge - had not been contacted, but that his office will likely file cruelty to animal charges against the couple.
Taylor said the five animals are expected to live, but that one of the horses found in an approximately 20 foot-by-20 foot dog pen was exceptionally thin with some bones exposed.
A report made by sheriff's animal control officer Jason Chapman indicated that when he first went to the location on May 10 that there were "no visible signs" the animals had been fed or watered "in several days."
"There's a lot of avenues that people could take to avoid this if they just call the animal shelter, neighbors, somebody will help them," Taylor said.
Cruelty to animals is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine not to exceed $4,000.
