Portsmouth Animal Control officers are seeking the public's help in finding the suspect or suspects responsible for a gruesome act of animal cruelty. Authorities say a dog was found skinned, hanging from a utility pole on the afternoon of May 11.

The dead animal, believed to be a female chow mix, was found around 1:20pm in the vicinity of Belmont and McLean Streets in the old Fairwood Homes section of the city.

While a veterinarian has examined the dog's body, a cause or time of death has not yet been determined. Due to the condition of the body, officials say a full necropsy will not be conducted.

Although the dog's fur was not found at the scene, officials believe the dog had a black coat.

Once the investigation is complete, a determination will be made as to whether this is a class 1 misdemeanor or a class 6 felony.

Anyone with information regarding this crime is asked to call the Crimeline at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Police are also looking for the dog's owner.
