Mobile police arrested Gregory Daniel Matthews on Wednesday night and charged him with cruelty to animals after he allegedly taunted one pit bull with another in an attempt to make them fight, authorities said.
Matthews, 42, was arrested at his home on in Mobile, said Elizabeth Flott, humane officer for the Mobile Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
He was taken to Mobile County Metro Jail, where he was released on $1,000 bail.
Bill Fassbender, director of animal control at the Mobile Animal Shelter, said police confiscated six pit bulls at Matthews' home and brought them to the shelter.
Fassbender said the dogs were in good physical condition, and no wounds or scars were found on them, so they were released back to Matthews.
He said Matthews was charged with the city ordinance of cruelty to animals because he allegedly was taunting the dogs and trying to get them to fight.
