Puppy found with ears cut off
Schertz, TX (US)

Incident Date: Thursday, Apr 28, 2005
County: Bexar

Disposition: Open

Suspect(s) Unknown - We need your help!

Authorities have begun investigating what they believe is a case of animal cruelty. A mixed-breed puppy believed to be at least 8 weeks old was found April 28 in Schertz Park with his ears severed.

"It was ugly. I have never seen anything like that," said Schertz Public Information Officer Debbie Gildea.

His new name is Tipper, and despite the ordeal he has endured, he still likes being around people, said Schertz Animal Control Supervisor Heather Barker.

Barker was notified at about 11 p.m. by Universal City Fire Department officials after the woman who found the injured and sick Tipper dropped him off at the fire station.

She reported the incident to the Schertz Police Department, who began its investigation.

Lt. Mark Shupp, an 18-year police veteran, said he has been investigating the case but has very few leads.

"No one has come forward with any information," Shupp said. "It is very hard to find anything."

Shupp said animal cruelty cases are a rare occurrence in the city of Schertz, but they do happen. He said this case was the worst he'd ever seen.

Meanwhile, Tipper underwent several tests, and animal control officials determined the puppy suffered from several ailments, including anemia, hook worms and round worms.

Barker and her staff are working to help Tipper recover so he can be adopted.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Shupp at (210) 658-5321.
