Two Huntly teenagers have been charged with aggravated cruelty to an animal after they allegedly poured a container of glue over three cats and set them on fire.

Police say the two young men came across the wild cats behind the shops on Huntly's main street on April 19.

The cats were caught in humane traps that had been set by the Waikato District council.

The men are accused of dousing the cats with glue and then making a trail of glue from the cats to outside the cage.

Police say they set the cats on fire, lighting the glue from outside the cage.

The 17 and 18-year-olds will appear in the Huntly district court at the end of May.
