Punta Gorda Police received a 9-1-1 call May 2, 2005 in the afternoon from a man who witnessed another man throw a kitten out of a moving vehicle. Now police are searching for the man responsible for throwing at least two kittens out of the window of his moving vehicle.

"Looks like he just threw them. We're not sure how he did it, but it looks like he just threw them out the window to make sure they landed in the roadway so they would be killed," Reynolds stated.

The Punta Gorda police received a call from a person, reporting that someone was throwing kittens out of a black Ford pickup truck. Reynolds says she found the first one near the intersection of Helen Street and southbound US 41.

About a mile and a half down the road, a second kitten was found on the side of the road, also dead.

"It's heart-breaking because these kittens were only 5, 6 weeks old at the most," said Reynolds.

Michael Courchaine helps run Charlotte County's Animal Welfare League. That's where stray and unwanted animals can be taken to for care.

Courchaine says it's unfortunate to hear such gruesome reports of animal abuse when facilities like his are always open and willing to help.

"People can come to us and turn their animal in. We're not going to turn them away," said Courchaine.

The Punta Gorda Police opened a felony investigation to find the man responsible.

If the man is found, he could be charged with animal cruelty, a second degree felony.
