Des Moines police are trying to find the person responsible for gluing the mouth, nose and eyes of Brittany Garcia's 5-month-old papillon-poodle mix, Precious.
Garcia discovered her puppy in pain after she had put her in the back yard tied to a swingset on the morning of May 1. When she and her husband heard the dog crying, she went out to check on him. The puppy's ears were as hard as a rock. She treated the puppy's eyes with a moist towel.
The dog was taken to veterinarian Steven Safris for treatment. The dog's ear canals had been filled with super glue, its nasal passages glued, and its eyes glued, too. The moisture from the nose and mouth had kept the glue from sealing them shut. The dog received medication and general anesthesia so that most of the glue could be removed. Glue was left on the dog's eardrums so it could loosen with time.
The Animal Rescue League is offering a $500 reward for information in the case and Mike Butts and My100 listeners are offering a $2,400 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for the attack.
He's normally a house dog, but for about an hour over the weekend, while the owner took a nap, the puppy was out back of the house, tied to a swing set.
"My kids worshipped this puppy. It broke their hearts. Whoever did this deserves this to happen to them," says Brittany Garcia. She just bought this puppy for her kids a week ago. If you look closely at this four-pound, delicate puppy named Precious, you can see some of the scars left behind by the super glue.
"It was everywhere, his private parts, his bottom. It looked like they tried to super glue his mouth shut. What kind of person would do this?" asks Garcia. She thinks it was kids. "They looked like they were around 15 or 17." If you have information on this case, please contact: Des Moines Police Department 515-283-4800
