A stray one year old cat that had been shot, suffered in the wild for about two weeks before being rescued in Shelburne. The injured cat had her left rear leg amputated by a veterinarian after a woman found the cat in her driveway Saturday.
The cat was starving and in obvious pain when it tried to use its shattered and shrivelled limb.
A local pet care worker called the rural area "the capital of animal abuse."
X-rays showed pellets in the hindquarters, but the bone shattering blast caused the cat tremendous suffering. The veterinarian treating the cat said x-rays showed 13 shotgun pellets lodged in the cat's abdomen, rear legs and spinal muscles. Two pellets shattered the leg which could not be saved.
A couple hours after surgery, the cat was purring. Clinic staff said, "She's very friendly, very loving and you would be amazed at how well she'll get around."
The cat will be kept until well enough to go to a new home or into care of the Tears of Joy. This is the charity that is picking up the $800 medical bill for the cat's medical treatment. The charity's phone number is 1-519-925-1121.
