weak sentence = one star

more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Russellville, AR (US)

Incident Date: Friday, Jun 30, 2000
County: Pope

Disposition: Convicted

» Jonathon Moore - Acquitted
» George Allan Pettingill

Case Updates: 1 update(s) available

Jonathon Moore, 20, of Center Ridge and George Allan Pettingill, 20, of Springfield have had charges brought against them for allegedly throwing a kitten out of a moving car. Pettingill threw the kitten out of the car window near 700 N. Arkansas Street while Moore was the driver.

Pettingill said he and Moore found the kitten at a Sonic Drive In in Morrilton. Pettingill said he "threw the kitten out of the vehicle because he though it would be funny."

The kitten died a week later.

City Attorney Don Bourne is responsible for prosecuting the two men. He said he has received about 120 to 150 letters and the case and more keep coming in every day.

Daphna Nachminovitch, senior caseworker for research, investigations and rescue for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals in Norfolk, VA, said if they are convicted of the charges they should receive jail time and when out of jail be prohibited from having contact with animals. They should also be required to do community service, but not at an animal shelter.

Jonathon Moore has been charged with conspiracy to commit animal cruelty. George Allan Pettingill charged with animal cruelty and disorderly conduct.

Judge Sutterfield sentenced George Allan Pettingill, 20, of Springfield to 60 days in jail and fined him $1,000 for animal cruelty after he threw a kitten out the window of a moving car. Pettingill was also ordered to pay restitution for veterinary services provided to the kitten which later died. Pettingill was also fined $110 for disorderly conduct.

Sutterfield acquitted Jonathan Moore, 20, of Center Ridge but convicted Pettingill.
