Stefanie J. Sanford, 18, was charged at the Tazewell County Courthouse with aggravated animal cruelty, a Class 4 felony, and cruel treatment, a Class A misdemeanor.

Also charged at the same time was Earl L. Marshall, 25, who faces one count of violation of owner's duties, a Class B misdemeanor, and one count of driving while license revoked or suspended, a Class 4 felony.

According to the Creve Coeur Police Department, Sanford allegedly picked up a stray kitten, carried the kitten to a pickup truck and tossed the kitten into the back of the truck, where a black pit bull terrier was tied up.

The dog attacked the kitten, biting it several times, but it escaped. Creve Coeur police later found it alive, but with puncture wounds to its head, back and stomach.

When officers stopped the truck, which was driven by Marshall, they found "quite a bit of blood" in the back of the truck. The pit bull also had suffered many serious scratches when the kitten fought to defend itself.

Marshall was ticketed for driving with a suspended license, and cited for failing to provide veterinary care to prevent suffering to the pit bull.
