more information on voting

When you vote, you are voting on whether or not the punishment fit the crime, NOT on the severity of the case itself. If you feel the sentence was very weak, you would vote 1 star. If you feel the sentence was very strong, you would vote 5 stars.

Please vote honestly and realistically. These ratings will be used a a tool for many future programs, including a "People’s Choice" of best and worst sentencing, DA and judge "report cards", and more. Try to resist the temptation to vote 1 star on every case, even if you feel that 100 years in prison isn’t enough.

Cat severely beaten
Bronx, NY (US)

Incident Date: Saturday, Apr 23, 2005
County: Bronx

Disposition: Convicted

Defendant/Suspect: Robert Cabassa, Jr

Case Updates: 2 update(s) available

A Bronx man was arrested for viciously beating up his cat, knocking out two of its teeth, singing its whiskers and crushing one of its paws, officials said.

Robert Cabassa Jr., 32, a concert promoter and former Latin King, was charged with aggravated animal cruelty, a felony, said Joseph Pentangelo, a special agent with the ASPCA.

On April 15, Cabassa, a party promoter, pounded on his 7-month-old cat, named "Tuesday", until area residents reported it to officials, Pentangelo said. "It appears to have been a prolonged beating," said Pentangelo, who added that the cat's right paw was "smashed."

Investigators responded that evening and took Tuesday, an orange domestic shorthair, to the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in Manhattan, where he is recovering, Pentangelo said.

At 1:10 p.m. on April 22, Cabassa was arrested at his home. He told investigators that he repeatedly kicked and beat the cat because he was a first-time pet owner, Pentangelo said.

Case Updates

Robert Cabassa was sentenced to nine months behind bars. In addition to the nine-month sentence, Justice John Byrne ordered Cabassa to serve a concurrent term of five months for violating the terms of his parole from a previous forgery conviction. He also was barred from owning a pet for five years.

Robert Cabassa pleaded guilty to beating a 6-month-old kitten because he thought it had urinated on his computer, according to prosecutors. Cabassa assaulted the kitten while on parole for a forgery conviction, Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson's office said in a news release. The kitten suffered a fractured eye socket and had its teeth knocked out.

Cabassa's arrest on an animal cruelty charge violated the terms of his parole, so he was to serve the remaining five months of a 1 1/2- to three-year prison term on the forgery charge, prosecutors said.

Cabassa pleaded guilty to one count of torturing and injuring an animal. He faces nine months in prison, which would run at the same time as the forgery sentence, prosecutors said. Sentencing was scheduled for May 31.
