The SPCA swooped down on a cockfighting ring in Vineland. The birds were discovered after a brush fire in the area. Animal cruelty officials confiscated 120 birds. They said 75 of them were roosters, which were trained to fight.
Some of the roosters had their combs cut off and others were tagged. The SPCA said that it would have to euthanize the fighting roosters, because they are too violent.
Authorities also said that the conditions at the farm were deplorable.
"The food and water is full of dirt, water is green, pretty disgusting. Trash everywhere, beer bottles, it's really a horrendous situation," said Beth Greco, of the Cumberland County SPCA.
Authorities said that they also found burned rooster parts in a barrel.
It is illegal to own, train or fight birds in New Jersey. The SPCA said that the owner of the farm is visiting Puerto Rico right now and will face felony charges when he returns.
