Two teenage boys (14 and 19) and one teenage girl (17) took baseball bats and pipes and beat to death 15 calves at a Monroe dairy farm. In addition, 18 other Holstein calves were injured at the Werkhoven Dairy Farm in Tualco Valley, south of Monroe.
Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Kenneth Cowsert sentenced Kevin Broers (19) to the recommended nine months in jail, plus 240 hours of community service. The longest he could have imposed was a year in jail for three counts of first-degree animal cruelty. The judge told Broers he needs a mental evaluation while in jail.
Broers and the two other defendants will be responsible for repaying Steve and Andy Werkhoven, who run the farm. Cowsert told Broers he'll land back in jail if he fails to make regular payments.
Broers originally was the only one charged in the crime, but deputy prosecutor Jim Townsend said two witnesses played as much or more of a role in the calf beatings.
In December, the 14-year-old Woodinville boy received a sentence of 42 weeks.
On Jan 17, 2003, the 17-year-old girl pleaded guilty to three counts of first-degree animal cruelty in the Aug. 29 incident. She was sentenced in juvenile court to 30 days in the Denney Juvenile Justice Center.
Case UpdatesBroers has been arrested for investigation of arson in Everett. Police say the 21-year-old Everett man and two others are responsible for firing a flare gun into an apartment last month and causing a fire that caused $1,000 worth of damage.
