Promoting cockfighting
Saint Pauls, NC (US)

Incident Date: Tuesday, Apr 19, 2005
County: Robeson

Disposition: Alleged

Alleged: Larry Dale Hollingsworth

A St. Pauls man was charged on April 19, 2005 with animal cruelty and promoting gamecock fighting. Larry Dale Hollingsworth, 41, of N.C. 20, owns J&J Feed Store. He is charged with two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty and misdemeanor instigating cockfighting by the sale of supplements and tools used in cockfighting.

Katherine Floyd, the county's animal cruelty officer, carried a box of items out of the store on N.C. 20 on the afternoon of April 19. Included were $1,000 worth of "enhancement drugs," record books, bandages and tools that are used to spur the animals to fight.

Floyd said Hollingsworth was charged with animal cruelty after two roosters were discovered in his back yard with injuries, including a swollen eye and scabs.

Floyd said Hollingsworth claimed the roosters had "a yard accident," but she said the injuries are consistent with those suffered at cockfights.

"It's not illegal to own a gamecock, but it's illegal to fight them and promote the fighting," Floyd said. "The bottom line is people are fighting gamecocks in Robeson County. We're not going to allow a business to sell supplements that promote and enhance this type of behavior."
