Bryan Goodell, age 32 and Tony Bashaw age 20, have been charged with 1 count of misdemeanor cruelty to animals. The 2 Keene men reportedly shot the 2 Labrador-mix dogs in the head with Bashaw's rifle and left them in the woods to die.

Tasha and Cheyenne survived and recovered at the Monadnock Humane Society in Swanzey, NH. The men told the police they shot the dogs because Goodell was moving and couldn't take them with him and that the humane society wouldn't take them because they were full.

Lisa LaFontaine, the Executive Director of the Humane Society, stated that Goodell contacted her, and was told the shelter was full but the Goodell told her he could keep the dogs until the shelter had space. LaFontaine stated if she had known Goodell planned to shoot the dogs, she would have made sure they were somehow taken in immediately.

The two dogs were initially taken to Park Place Veterinary Hospital in Swanzey. Tasha was taken there after being found wandering on Route 101. Benjamin Schneider took Cheyenne there; a friend of Goodell's who notice the dog acting strangely. He was able to lure the dog over when he discovered she was shot.

The charge carries a maximum penalty of 1 year in jail and a fine of up to $2,000. They have been released on $500 personal recognizance. The arraignment is scheduled for July 23rd in Keen District Court.

Case Updates

Bryan B. Goodell, 32, pleaded guilty in Keene District Court to Animal cruelty.

Tony A. Bashaw, 20, is scheduled to be tried on Sept 26, 2002, on a single count of cruelty to animals.

Goodell's sentence was a suspended one-year sentence for pleading guilty; give up his pets for five years; perform 100 hours of community service at the humane society; pay $480 in veterinary bills for the injured dogs; give up ownership of the dogs; and pay the humane society $1,560 for room and board for the animals.

Trendell and Goodell's lawyer, Bruce D. Simpson, argued Goodell shouldn't be forced to give up his other pets because they belong to his girlfriend and her children. The judge disagreed.

Judge Thomas T. Barry said, "I'm not going to have him in a house with other animals given the nature of this crime."
